The Importance of ADL in Digital Transformation of Defence and Security Education

Encouraged by the effects of technological transformation on educational processes, the Defense and Security sector recognized the potential of applying Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) approach to meet the needs of education and training of its personnel. This method is suitable for application at the University study programs as well as to all levels of military training. ADL relies on the principles of andragogy, requiring a self-driven and independent learning aimed towards improving students’ knowledge and skills. Learner-centered principles supported by distance learning services require a new role for instructors who are tasked with creating content and moderating instructional delivery in a collaborative environment, as stimulating blended and hybrid form of teaching. Therefore, the personnel involved need to master the content, apply pedagogical principles, and at the same time conduct classes in a high-tech environment. It is clear from the above that the basic elements needed for the effective application of this approach are trained educators, quality content and sophisticated equipment. The integration of digital tools into the learning environment has revolutionized traditional teaching methods, offering interactive, flexible and personalized learning experiences, whereas, application of modern technologies in the educational process, such as artificial intelligence, simulation, virtual, augmented and mixed reality promotes greater engagement among students, thereby increasing their learning efficiency. However, the challenges include the need for a student self-discipline, dealing with technical difficulties, and the risk of reducing social interaction, present in traditional education. In the work, we reflect on the mentioned topics in a manner adapted to the specific needs set by the educational requirements intended for the Defense and Security sector. As active participants of the e-University project, we are analyzing the potential contributions that the project might have to raising the quality of the study programs being conducted at University of Defense and Security.
